Dakota Stones Microfacet Gemstones & DIY Memory Wire Bracelet with Cellini Spiral Pattern

Our large selection of micro facet gemstones, from our friends at Dakota Stones, are small diamond cut gemstones expertly cut into rounds, rondelles, bicones, cubes and coins. Learn about how these gemstones are cut and get designing with micro facet gemstones in a Cellini Spiral and adding it to a fun memory wire wrap bracelet.

Micro Faceted Gemstones

Dakota Stones’ faceted gemstones ‘are machine cut with industrial-grade diamonds. With the use of new technology, geometry and an understanding of light, which is extremely important for precious stones with strong dispersion, [Dakota Stones] can now make the facets on each stone cleaner, sharper, and more consistent with minimal or no need for polishing. This means…manufacturing mathematically precise cuts on extremely small surfaces while getting the same luster and shine as we would see on large surfaces.’

Now let’s get to designing with small faceted gemstones!

Black Spinel Cellini Spiral Memory Wire Bracelet

The basic design for the cellini spiral is using a 11/0 delica, 11/0 round Miyuki seed bead and 8/0 Miyuki seed bead. In this case, we’re subbing the 8/0 with some gorgeous 4mm rondelle Black Spinel gemstone bead.

Items used in Cellini Spiral pattern:

  • BSP4RL-F – 4mm Black Spinel Diamond Faceted Rondelle Beads
  • SB00145 – DB041 11/0 Transp. Silver Lined Crystal Delica Seed Beads
  • SB00416 – 11-9591 Pearl Ceylon Miyuki Seed Beads
  • SB00422 – 11-91051 Galvanized Silver Miyuki Seed Beads
  • A006587 – Crystal Fireline Thread 50 Yard Spool (6LB TEST)
  • A006767 – #10 Long English Beading Needles – 4 Pack

Items to complete memory wire bracelet:

  • WR00120 – Large Silver Heavy Duty Bracelet Memory Wire
  • A003566 – 10mm Silver Plated Bali Style Spacer
  • CH01105 (6) – 5mm Round Metallic Platinum Leather
  • Z006368 – 5mm Silver Brass Cord End Cap – 4 Pack
  • ONX10RD-8 – 10mm Onyx Gemstone Round Beads

Directions:

  1. Start with 4-5 feet of beading thread. (This is a starting piece, you’ll need to add more to complete the spiral.) Sew on 6 delica beads, 2 pearl beads, 2 silver beads, 2 black spinel beads, 2 silver beads and 2 pearl beads.

2. Tie threads together to create a loop of beads. Tie two knots, making sure to leave a 5-6 inch tail end. Sew through loop once around.

3. You are going to peyote stitch around the looped beads:
– Pick up a delica bead skip a delica on the loop beads, sew through next delica.
– Pick up another delica, skip a delica and sew through next delica.
– Pick up a delica skip first pearl seed bead and sew through next pearl seed bead.
– Pick up a pearl seed bead, skip silver bead and sew through next silver bead.
– Pick up a silver bead, skip first black spinel and sew through next black spinel.
– Pick up a black spinel, skip first silver bead and sew through next silver bead.
– Pick up a silver bead skip first pearl seed bead and sew through next peal seed bead.
– Pick up a pearl bead, skip first delica, sew through next delica and up through the next delica to start the next row.

NOTE: As a helpful tip while you sew around your spiral, when you are picking up a bead, you are picking up the bead corresponding to the bead you just sewn out of. So if you sewed out of a silver seed bead, you should pick up a silver seed bead in your pattern.

4. Repeat step 3 for the next row. By this time, your spiral will start to take shape. Use a 5mm wide dowel to help guide your bead in a spiral shape.

5. Repeat step 3 until you’ve used up all your Black Spinel beads.

NOTE: Between your spiral, you’ll run out of beading thread. To add more, sew your ends through your spiral, looping around a couple of beads before cutting off excess. Add another 4-5 feet of beading thread to your needle, loop around some beads of your spiral before guiding your needle back through the path of where you’ve left off to continue your spiral pattern.

6. Your Cellini spiral is done.

7. To make your memory wire bracelet, make a simple loop to one end of your memory wire with Memory Wire Finishing Pliers.

8. Slide on an onyx bead, spacer, 3 onyx beads, spacer and another onyx bead. Slide end cap and 3 inches of leather and end cap. Slide on Cellini spiral, onyx bead, spacer, 3 onyx beads, spacer and another onyx bead. Slide on another end cap, 3 inches of leather and end cap.

9. Cut excess memory wire with Memory Wire Cutters, leaving about 1/4 to 1/2 inches. Make a simple loop with this end.

Directions:

  1. String TEN 4mm gemstone and TEN Chinese glass alternating them on the 22-gauge wire. (Do not cut wire off of spool.)
  2. Make a loop an inch from the end then pull one of each bead next to the loop you’ve made and then make a loop on the other side, without cutting wire. Continue making loops, alternating in different directions, while pulling beads up until you have loops after all of the beads.
  3. Cut loop of beads from the spool, leaving an inch of wire on either side. Gently wrap it around the pen/dowl working it to form a bead.
  4. Slide bead off the pen and onto a 3.25 inch piece of 18-gauge wire. Slide on a 3mm Chinese glass next to the wire bead followed by an 8mm gemstone and another 3mm Chinese glass and make a simple loop. Repeat on the other side and curve thee wire slightly.
  5. To make ear wires, cut two 3-inch pieces of 20-gauge wire. Make a loop to one end of both of the wires. Add a 3mm Chinese glass bead to each wire, then bend wires at a 45 degree angle on top of the bead. (Try to bend and make the ear wires both at the same time for consistency.) Wrap wire around pen to create an ear wire shape. Cut off excess wire if needed. Use a soft grit file to smooth out the ends or a Bur Cup tool.
  6. Loop and coil 20-gauge wire with round nose pliers, making a 5-6mm loop. Cut loops to make 2 jump rings.
  7.  Trim chain link to have large loops on top and bottom. Cut 2 pieces.
  8. Open one loop of your curved gemstone link, slide on a chain link end and close. Repeat to other end of link and chain.
  9. Open jump rings you made, slide on both of your other chain ends and through loop of ear wires you made. Close jump rings.
  10. Repeat all steps for other earring.

Tourmaline Mining Adventure

Our Designer So Vang went Tourmaline mining in southern California. Check out her rocky finds and simple wire tutorial to wrapping raw gemstones.

Written by So Vang-

My husband and I visited the Himalaya Tourmaline Mine in Santa Ysabel, California, known for their pink and green Tourmaline. You can also fine crystal quartz and black tourmaline. The added bonus about going to this mine is that you don’t have to bring any tools. With the day fee, you get buckets to use, mesh sifters and shovel. Wear comfortable shoes, a hat and clothes you don’t mind getting dirt on, because you will get dirty. I suggest bringing a toothbrush to help brush the dirt and long gloves because yours nails will get chipped if you have brittle nails like me. And lastly a container to put all your fabulous finds in!

Keep in mind that at their mining site, larger gems has been sorted out and what you sift through is a sifted pile. Granted, be open minded because you can still get a large piece of gem and gorgeous tourmaline chips! They also have a higher-quality bag that you can sift through for an extra $100. But enjoy what you find because the small gems you find and discover is all in the adventure itself.

Below is a pile of small pink, green and black Tourmaline we found. They certainly look gorgeous in their raw state.

GoodyBeads Blog: Mining for Pink Green and Black Tourmaline

The way Tourmaline is created it by the natural minerals and chemicals within the pockets of crystal quartz. You can see in the images below the raw forms of quartz with pieces of pink, green and black tourmaline jutting out of them.

Artistic Wire® Crimp Tool For Large Wire Crimp Connectors

Watch as Wyatt White from Artistic Wire teaches how to make a cold connection with the Artistic Wire Crimp Tool for Large Wire Crimp Connector and examples of different ways you can create cold connection bracelets/bangles.

Cold connect large gauges of wire to making bracelets/bangles by crimping Large Wire Crimp Connectors with Artistic Wire Crimp Tool (TL00310).

Before we get started on the video, here are few important products you will need:

Large Wire Crimp Connectors

These crimps are specially designed for making cold connections with 12, 14, and 16 gauge wires. There are three sizes of crimps with three finishes to choose from.

The 1.5 mm large crimps are used with 16 Gauge wires – Z009603, Z009606, Z009609

The 2.0 mm large crimps are used with 14 Gauge wires – Z009604, Z009607, Z009610

And the 2.2 mm large crimps are used with 12 Gauge wires – Z009605, Z009608, Z009611

Or you can purchase the variety set – Z009600, Z009601, Z009602

Wire

Using size 12, 14 and 16 are thicker gauge wires, best to use for these crimp connectors.

Crimp Tool

Artistic Wire Crimp Tool for Large Wire Crimp Connectors TL00310 is a heavier duty tool to crimp larger widths of crimp tubes and for larger gauges of wire. Compared to the original crimpers that has two notches: one to curve the crimp tube and the other to fold it, the Artistic Wire Crimp Tool has only one notch that makes an indent notch to squeeze the crimp tube onto the wire.

How to Make a Leather and Memory Wire Bracelet – Video Tutorial

Learn how make our popular leather and memory wire bracelets in our video tutorial and watch as we teach you how to finish your memory wire bracelet with the nifty Memory Wire Finishing Pliers.

Leather and Memory Wire Components

Here are items you need in order to make your leather and memory wire bracelet.

Round Leather

Round Leather is the star of your bracelet. We carry 5mm and 6mm round leather cord, which will need to have a hollow core or hole inside the leather. The hollow core helps the memory wire go through the leather. Make sure when selecting your leather cord to read the descriptions, as not all round leather cords have a hollow core or hole. All leather cord is sold in inches, so order according to the amount of inches you will need for your project.

Another type of cord you can use are Regaliz® Licorice Leather with Hole as seen in our Leather & Swarovski Trend. They are thicker in size with flatten sides.

You can also use Hollow Rubber Cord. These are 3mm in diameter and sold in foot increments. Make sure they say “hollow” in the description for memory wire.

Memory Wire

Memory Wire is the skeleton of your bracelet. Make sure the wire you are selecting is round as we also carry flat memory wire and that “Memory Wire” in the description and/or name.

End Caps

End caps will be used to cap the ends of your leather cord. They make your leather ends look cleaner and finished. When looking for end caps, you can find them in Findings: Clasps & End Caps, TierraCast Findings, or search “End Caps.” PLUS, read the descriptions to determine their inside diameter/opening. This will help to accommodate the round leather size you choose to order.

Beads

Lastly, add these beads to your bracelet: glass beads, Swarovski crystals, gemstones, wood and any type of beads that will slide easily through the memory wire. Don’t forget some accent beads like bead caps, metal beads and seed beads.

Some beads we would not recommend are large-hole beads like interchangeable large-holes or large-hole gemstones because their holes are large and may wiggle around on the memory wire. Some tubes will not work because their shape will not curve along with the memory wire. Pearl beads can be tricky because some will have holes to small for the memory wire.

Tools

The best tool to cut your memory wire is the Memory Wire Cutter (TL00206). This cutter is meant to cut through heavy-duty wire like memory wire or thicker gauge wires.

One of your best friends in making your bracelet is the Memory Wire Finishing Pliers (TLZ0207). It’s a sturdy round plier used to loop your wires. It has two mandrel sides to create a consistent 2mm or 4mm loop. This tool will make it easier for your hands to making a loop compared to your round-nose pliers.
