Bead pens are a sentimental and personable gift the gift-receiver will love and use forever. We have a few holiday-inspired bead pens that you can make and gift this holiday season.

Lampwork Tube Bead Pen

We took this gorgeous lampwork tube bead (Z007050) and reamed the hole with a bead reamer (A002370) wide enough to slide onto the mandrel of the bead pen. Then added some beads around to accent this focal lampwork bead.

Lampwork and Aluminum Bead Pen

Diamond cut aluminum beads definitely has a vintage holiday vibe to it. Thus, we have added it to this red bead pen with lampwork beads.

Beaded Bead Pen

Another different addition to bead pens are beaded beads. We dug up some old beaded beads and accented this gold bead pen with it’s hint of blues, golds and whites. We added some TierraCast spacers, white lampwork beads and a fancy, shiny silver bead to the middle.

What’s better than family-and friend-filled holiday feasts? An embellished holiday feast! We bling up our jewelry, why not our dining utensils! Seriously, I think most DIY-ers are so busy making jewelry for gift-giving, they completely forget the forks and spoons! How cute is a red-and-green canape knife? Or a serving set for your salad or turkey with all the fixins. The best part is, you can remove the large hole interchangeable beads and use them in your jewelry the next day. Salad Serving Set

Our salad serving set is ideal for serving salads, I’ve found embellished forks and spoons perfect for mashed potatoes and dressing as well!

The handles on each service piece unscrew so you can load up about 2.5 inches of beady deliciousness. Slide on the O-Rings to secure the beads from scooting around on the stem. Once you’re pleased with your line up, simply screw the ball onto the top of the stem and you’re ready to munch!

Are you thinking about Christmas in July? We are. We want to give you a heads up about the gift of handmade this upcoming Christmas. And what better way to jump start your jewelry projects by learning the basic skill of how to make a headpin wire loop.

Make sure to have lots of headpins on hand. Plated headpins are inexpensive and a great starter for wire looping. Don’t be discouraged if your first or second or tenth loop doesn’t turn out the way you want it. Practice. Practice. Practice. Just remember to grip your tools loose but firm and as cliché as it may sound, it’s all in the wrist.

Tip:
When clipping, be safe and hold headpin end so that the end doesn’t shoot away. You can also face the headpin end away from you – towards your jewelry mat – to avoid excess from flying off.

Bead pens are easy to design and make a wonderful gifts. Spruce up your workstation with an ornately-beaded pen or give a teacher, office co-worker, or special friend a pen they’ll surely swoon over.

Bead pens have three separate pieces: a base, a mandrel, and a cap (shown below).

To assemble your pen and design, first twist the shorter threads of the mandrel into the bead pen itself. Apply beads to the mandrel (approximately a space of 2.5”) as desired. Beads and spacers will need a 2mm or larger bead hole diameter to fit onto the mandrel. Tip: The GoodyBeads.com beads and spacers that are labeled “Large Hole” will fit GoodyBead.com bead pen mandrels. Lastly, once you have decorated your mandrel with beads and spacers, complete it by attaching the pen cap to the top of the mandrel.

If you find that the beads and spacers are spinning after placing the cap on, add another spacer or bead to fill any gaps. If the gap is not wide enough for a bead or spacer, add a Rubber O-ring at the top or bottom of your beads. This will help secure the beads in place.
